Graduates are prepared to become guidance counselors in the K-12 school setting. The curriculum emphasis is on guidance, clinical counseling principles, guidance program development, and implementation and evaluation procedures.

Pupil Services License

Optional Master of Arts (M.A.) or Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree

Students seeking licensure as a school counselor must complete coursework in core areas of counseling training and pass the Praxis II School Guidance and Counseling examination (# 20420).

Upon successful completion of the School Counselor licensure program of study, the student is eligible for a Pupil Services: School Counselor license (#270200).

Note: Students applying for the M.Ed. or M.A. degrees must complete appropriate graduate core requirements, complete an interview with the assigned advisor, file a planned program of study, demonstrate proficiency with specified counseling behaviors during CNL 863, and complete the application for a counseling practicum during the first week of the term preceding the quarter in which the practicum is offered, except for fall quarter for which applicaiotn is made during the first two weeks of spring quarter.

Students who wish to complete licensure requirements at the graduate level but do not wish to purse a graduate degree may be admitted as licensure candidates with the permission of the department. It is critical that you work closely with your assigned advisor regarding required coursework.
