Thematic Sessions (Single Paper or Roundtable)

1.Purpose: Objective of presentation/ relationship to ATE interests.

Alternative models, partnerships and technology

This session will present a collaborative comprehensive model of instruction in technology and telecommunications between Wright State University and local partnership schools to prepare early childhood educators for the 21 st century. The program is designed to provide pre-service and in-service teachers the opportunity to work in Learning Community Teams to update their computer and telecommunication skills and apply these skills in designing multi-media presentation in their classrooms to enhance learning.

2. Relationship to Conference Theme:

Powerful Teacher Educators Leading in the 21 st Century

The technological age is alive and well, yet many students enter the workforce unprepared. Many of today’s public school teachers do not consider themselves competent in the area of technology. This trend will continue as two million teachers retire and new educators take their places, unless incoming teachers become technologically competent before entering the teaching force. Higher education accrediting organizations, learned societies and state departments of education now require that all teacher preparation programs emphasize the infusion of technology into the K-12 curricula. This proposal documents a program to prepare pre-service teachers while updating in-service teacher’s skills as a collaborative comprehensive effort.

3. Abstract of Presentation (250-300 words)

National initiatives, higher education accrediting organizations, learned societies and state departments of education require that all teacher preparation programs emphasize the infusion of technology into the K-12 curricula. This proposal documents a program to prepare pre-service teachers while updating in-service teacher’s skills as a collaborative comprehensive effort. As part of Wright State University’s "Partners Transforming Education", The College of Education and Human Services (CEHS) has collaborated closely with Shilohview Elementary School to design "Best Practices: The WRIGHT Practices: Learning Communities for Tomorrow’s Teachers". The goals of this innovative program are to:

A program is suggested in which Learning Community Teams (pre-service and Cooperating teachers) become co-learners, consumers and producers of technology as they create multi-media learning opportunities for elementary aged students. The Teams will receive 2-3 hours of hands-on instruction each week during release time provided by the school system. During this time, they will develop, update and improve technology and telecommunication competencies. Application of technology is a major focus of this grant as Learning Community Teams collaborate to apply computer technology and telecommunications to classroom instruction.

The coordinators of the program will provide for instruction and will model effective use of technology in professional preparation classes. A graduate assistant will be available on-site to work with each team during the week. This proposal outlines a pilot program of one academic year. Upon completion, evaluation and modification, it will be integrated into other partnership sites in the Dayton Metropolitan Area.

4.Description of Audience Participation

Presenters will encourage participation of audience in sharing common goals and solutions in providing technology instruction and especially opportunities to apply learned skills into classroom curriculum.
