SESSION DESCRIPTION

A. SESSION OBJECTIVES / GOALS:

Wright State's mentorship model provides interaction between pre-service
teachers and children with gifts and talents from economically disadvantaged
urban schools. In sharing Wright State's mentorship program with attendees,
it is hoped that educational professionals and neighboring universities
will join together in their efforts to supply the guidance and support
needed to help more children at risk.

B. SESSION CONTENT / SKILLS FOCUS:

In many economically disadvantaged urban schools, identification and
placement policies and procedures tend to be biased against children with
potential gifts and talents. This practice results in under-identification
and under-service for many children of diversity. Mentorship programs
increase the probability of "success" for children at risk.

C. PRESENTATION STRATEGIES TO BE USED:

Under-identification and under-service for children with gifts and talents
from economically disadvantaged urban schools will be documented.
Mentorship as a catalyst to "success" will be discussed. Interaction
between presenters, student-intern mentors, and attendees will be an
integral to the presentation.

STATEMENT OF INTENT

Should this proposal be accepted, I agree on behalf of all persons listed
in this proposal to conduct this session on whatever day and time it is
scheduled (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday). I will ensure that all presenters
shall not present unless registered for the meeting. I understand that it
will be my responsibility to notify all presenters regarding the date, time,
and location of the session should it be accepted.

SESSION DESCRIPTION

A. SESSION OBJECTIVES/GOALS:

The portfolio is becoming an integral part of the educator's professional
files, from the pre-service teacher to the superintendent. The goal of this
session is to provide educators at all levels a conceptual overview of the
professional portfolio. Faculty and student presenters will review several
models, including hard copy, multi-media, CD-ROM and web page as presented
by pre-service teachers and faculty.

B. SESSION CONTENT / SKILLS FOCUS:

Professional portfolios may be constructed in many ways. An educator could
begin with a hard copy and easily develop this into a CD-ROM. A portfolio
could also be constructed using commercial software packages or on a
computer using hyperstudio. Software is also available to construct a web
page that can serve the purpose of an electronic portfolio. Students will
present actual samples they've constructed.

C. PRESENTATION STRATEGIES TO BE USED:

The presenters will interact with the audience in a discussion of the
elements of a portfolio. Several forms of portfolios will be shown including
hard copy, multimedia and on-line web portfolios. Students and faculty
portfolios will be shared. Handouts will be distributed.
