Wright State University welcomed the challenge of educational renewal and
joined hands with the Dayton metropolitan community at large to design a
program to better prepare qualified teachers. Early in their careers,

needed, loved and appreciated by those with whom they work.
Description:
Purpose
The goal of this presentation is to share models of teacher preparation
currently being implemented by Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio that
are examples of national efforts toward the renewal of teacher education.
Relationship
"Teacher as Problem Solver" is the conceptual model upon which the Teacher
Education Program of Wright State University is based. This session will
emphasis the implementation of this model.
Abstract
Wright State University (WSU) includes in its mission statement the goal of
"working with others to better understand and improve the human condition."
The College of Education and Human Services (CEHS) of WSU has chosen to
"improve the human condition," by concentrating on the process of teacher
education. WSU has joined with the Dayton metropolitan community, in a
collaborative effort. Partners Transforming Education: School -
University - Community. The joint goal is to create a new culture of
highly effective professional educators, responsive to society's needs. Two
models of teacher’s preparation have been initiated at WSU as a result.
Four Year Program
An education student begins Phase I of the Teacher Education Program by
taking courseware and by being involved in a 90 clock hour field experience
in a local school. In Phase II, students are again provided with 60 clock
hours of field placement. Phase III continues with 12 weeks of student
teaching.
Professional Year Program
The second partnership program has been designated as a "Professional Year
Program" (PYP). This program is an intensive, year long certification
program for students possessing an undergraduate degree. The participants
are preparing to begin a second career in the field of education in their
speciality area and are essentially seeking the state certification to do
so.
A PYP student spends a summer plus a full academic year in field experiences
and in WSU classes taught on-site, allowing the PYP students the fullest
participation possible at the partnership site for an entire school year.
These students are then able to apply for the State of Ohio Teacher's
License and are also well on their way to the completion of a Master's
Degree.
Participant Involvement:
Presenters will share Teacher education model with audience -- Audience
participation will be encouraged throughout the session.
