Grant Elements:

Envisioned Instructional Web Site:
Topic: Multi-cultural Education

The authors would invite reviewers to visit our websites at http://www.ed.wright.edu/cehs/helms/rhelms.htm
and at http://www.ed.wright.edu/cehs/stoll/stoll.htm.  These sites have been posted for several years and are regularly maintained .

Courses in which the Diversity Website would be used as a resource:

1.  The curriculum matter covered must be designed to be of value to faculty across a variety of OhioLINK Institutions.  Many Teacher Education Universities require a course in multiculturalism or in diversity.  In addition, several liberal arts courses would find this webpage to offer unique resources.  The proposed site would provide for collaborative learning, independent study, active learning, distance learning, and would solicit multi-institutional faculty contribution.

These specific courses taught at WSU (left column) are generic to all Colleges of Education across Ohio.

WSU   Course Titles /_______________________
how the proposed web site would be used:

Ed 214/301/602: Introduction to Education:
Ede 230/745: Foundations of Early Childhood Education:
The demographics of public education is becoming more diverse,     therefore pre-service teachers need greater exposure to multi-cultural    information.

Ed 216/710: Education in a multi-cultural pluralistic society
Ede 735:  Anti-Bias Curriculum in the Early Childhood Classroom
Pre-service / inservice teachers will explore resources on Gender,     Age, Race/ Ethnicity, Religion and Sexual Preference.
Students review case studies on the general topic of diversity in the     elementary and secondary classroom.
Professors contacted professors at other universities (National and     International) and matched students in teacher preparation to interact    electronically to explore educational issues.
Students can use SIRS Researcher to locate full text of articles on     social and global issues.

Ed 417/617  Elementary School Social Studies: Curriculum and     Materials
Ed 439/639  Secondary School Social Studies: Curriculum and     Materials

Ed 448/648  Improvement on Social Studies Instruction
Ed 608  Elementary School Social Studies: Curriculum and     Materials
•    A portion of all social studies courses involve relating subject matter    to teaching in a diverse environment.  Pre-service and inservice     teachers in these courses are given assignments to locate web sites     which may be used as resources in their respective classrooms.     Undergraduate and graduate students will design Resource Units     and Lesson Plans using diversity sources available from the World     Wide Web.
•    Students will locate web sites which provide opportunities for     correspondence with national and international webpals.
•    Research papers and report on aspects of diversity, in which     students access ERIC documents, and other on-line resources are     also required.
•    Pre-service / inservice teachers are corresponding through e-mail     with teachers from a local university sharing ideas and information.
•    Professors at two or more universities could jointly assign      collaborative learning projects.

2.  Ohio/Link Library
Professors who construct their own web pages to enhance their courses are able to easily conduct distance learning experiences.  Both author have used their web sites in distance learning environments.  The authors of this grant have collaborated with Wright State University librarians for years.  Of course, the authors would request additional collaboration with Wright State University librarians for the implementation of this grant.

During the 1996 -- 1997 academic years, the authors worked with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for two grants.  The first grant enabled the authors and a Centerville High School Librarian to participate in the Ernest L. Boyer Educational Technology Summit in Pittsburgh.  The authors then participated in the CPB Next Step Grant which provided for collaboration with Wright State University librarians and the Centerville City School Library and English Department.  The Boyer grant may be viewed at http://www.ed.wright.edu/cehs/helms/rhelms.htm(see grants section).  Also the Centerville Library webpage may be viewed at http://www.ed.wright.edu/cehs/helms/rhelms.htm(see exemplars section.

Given our record of collaboration with the Wright State University librarians, the authors would certainly maintain this relationship.  Our proposed diversity webpage would include all of the elements of the existing Ohio/Link web pages including notice of funding by Ohio Link Small Grant Project, e.mail function, teaching tools, technology tools, web technology tools, Ohio Link, and Diversity hypertext and hyper links.

3.  Copyright
No exclusive copyright claims will be made.

4.  Maintenance of Web site
The authors have a good deal of experience in designing and maintaining web sites.  We were selected to present our web pages at the World Conference on Education and Multimedia and Hypermedia and on Educational Telecommunications by the Association
for the Advancement of Computing in Education in Calgary, Alberta in June, 1997.  We have been recently selected to present our web pages at the  International Computers and Technology Conference in Cancun, Mexico, in May, 1998.  In addition, we have presented web technology at several other international, national, state, and regional conferences.  Our vitas are available upon request.

We certainly envision an interactive site which will be of great benefit to OhioLINK users.

5.  Faculty
Helms’ primary responsibilities are in Social Studies Education and in teaching Diversity courses at Wright State Universities Professional Development Schools.  Finegan is acting director of Early Childhood Education at Wright state University.  Finegan also teaches several diversity courses.  Helms and Finegan have conducted numerous professional technology presentations.  Helms and Finegan are interacting via the internet and the WWW with colleagues throughout the state, nation, and the world.
